The municipality had been formed in 1973 by the merging of the former municipalities of Eethen, Veen, and Wijk en Aalburg. On January 1, 2019 it joined Werkendam and Woudrichem in the new municipality of Altena.

The municipality, part of Land van Heusden en Altena, contained a large part of De Biesbosch area as it is located in the province of North Brabant. On 1 January 2019 it joined Woudrichem and Aalburg in the new municipality of Altena.

Landerd () is a former municipality within the province of North Brabant in the southern Netherlands. Since 2022 it has been part of the new municipality of Maashorst.
Schijndel
Schijndel () is a town and former municipality in the province of North Brabant, in the south of the Netherlands. Schijndel is located approximately southeast of 's-Hertogenbosch. Schijndel was founded on 6 December 1309. On 1 January 2017 Schijndel, together with Veghel and Sint-Oedenrode, merged into a new municipality, Meierijstad, which created the largest municipality of North Brabant by land area.

Rosmalen
Rosmalen () is a town in the province of North Brabant, in the south of the Netherlands. The town is located 6 kilometers east of the city of 's-Hertogenbosch (Den Bosch) and has been part of that municipality since 1996. Its population is around 37,240 on 1 January 2021. In 2005 the town began construction of a new neighbourhood, (named after the large kolks in the area created by flood water), to include 5,000 homes and other buildings.

Berlicum is a town in the south of the Netherlands, located in North Brabant's Meierij region near the city of 's-Hertogenbosch and the river Aa. The town was most likely founded between 600 and 700 AD. It was a municipality along with the village of Middelrode until a large-scale municipal reorganisation in 1996, when Berlicum and neighbouring Den Dungen merged with the municipality of Sint-Michielsgestel. In 2009, Berlicum had 9,743 inhabitants.
