It is the fourth largest city in Greece, and the largest city in the Greek islands, with a municipal population of 179,302 (2021) and 211,370 in its wider metropolitan area, according to the 2011 census.

Hersonissos (, meaning “peninsula”, Chersónisos, , also transliterated as Chersonissos and Hersónisos, nicknamed Cherso) is a town and a local government unit in the north of Crete, bordering the Mediterranean / Aegean Sea. The town is about 25 kilometers east of Heraklion and west of Agios Nikolaos. What is usually called Hersonissos is in fact its peninsula and harbour. It is part of the Heraklion regional unit. It is situated 25 km from the Heraklion airport and 27 km from the Heraklion port. The seat of the local government unit is the village of Gournes.

Moires (, "Fates") is a town and a former municipality in the Heraklion regional unit, Crete, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Faistos, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of and a population of 11,399 people (about 6,900 for the town itself). The weekly market of the agricultural town of Moires is the largest in the region. Nowadays, everyone in Gergeri and in Pano Riza is proud for the surplus of companies in Gergeri, and for the football club Rouvas F.C., which now is playing on Football League 2. Apesokari (Greek: Απεσωκάρι) is the archaeological site of an ancient Minoan cemetery. It is also a modern village with a population of 76 (2021) and is built at 155 m above sea level. It is in the municipality of Gortyna in the south of Heraklion regional unit, Greece.
