In Ukrainian culture, vertep (, from ) is a portable puppet theatre and drama, which presents the nativity scene, other mystery plays, as well as secular plots with satirical and comical elements. The original meaning of the word is "secret place", "cave", "den", referring to the cave where Christ was born, i.e., the Bethlehem Cave. Bu-Ba-Bu () is a literary performance group founded on April 17, 1985 in Lviv by three Ukrainian writers Yurii Andrukhovych, Viktor Neborak, and Oleksandr Irvanets. The group's three syllables stand for "burlesque, balagan, and buffonada". The idea behind the group's formation was in order to present a carnival like interpretation of events in Ukraine.
