Geprägt wurde das Jahr auch von dem Tōhoku-Erdbeben und -Tsunami vom 11. März. Infolge der Naturkatastrophe kam es im japanischen Kernkraftwerk Fukushima I zu einer folgenschweren Unfallserie in mehreren Reaktorblöcken.
