Auguste Mariette

Auguste Mariette, born François Auguste Ferdinand Mariette in Boulogne-sur-Mer in 1821, was a French Egyptologist, archaeologist, curator, and writer. He held the positions of director and curator and was a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, the Academy of Sciences of Turin, the Société nationale des Antiquaires de France, and the Academia Imperial de Belas Artes. He also held the noble titles of bey and pasha.

Mariette died in Cairo in 1881 and is buried there. His personal library is located at the Institut Français d'Archéologie Orientale, and his archives are held at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. His notable works include *Aperçu de l'histoire d'Egypte*, *Les papyrus égyptiens du Musée de Boulaq*, *Album du Musée de Boulaq*, *Voyage dans la Haute-Égypte*, and *Notice des principaux monuments exposés dans les galeries provisoires du Musée d'antiquités égyptiennes à Boulaq*. He is described in sources such as the *Nordisk familjebok* and the *Encyclopædia Britannica* 11th edition.
