It is typically mounted on the back of a tractor or front loader, the latter forming a "backhoe loader" (a US term, but known as a "JCB" in Ireland and the UK). The section of the arm closest to the vehicle is known as the boom, while the section that carries the bucket is known as the dipper (or dipper-stick), both terms derived from steam shovels. バックホー(英: backhoe 独:Tieflöffelbagger)とは、油圧ショベルの中でも、ショベル(バケット)をオペレータ側向きに取り付けたもののこと。オペレータ側向きのショベルでオペレータは自分に引き寄せる(抱え込む)方向に操作する。地表面より低い場所の掘削に適している。建設機械の一種。「バックホウ」と表記することも。(日本の行政用語では)ドラグショベルともいう。日本語のバックホーの語源は英語のbackhoeだが、英語ではその他、rear actorあるいはback actorと称することがある。
