The Numismatic Museum of the Ionian Bank was established in 1981 and is one of the most respected museums in its category, hosting exhibits of major significance and showcasing the monetary history of modern Greece. It is located at Plateia Iroon Kipriakou Agona, in the Old Town of Corfu’s capital. DISCOVER CORFU WITH OUR TOURS! Book an unforgettable Tour in Corfu or get there with your own rental car . Hosted in an impressive neoclassical building designed by the architect Ioannis Chronis, the museum operates within the same historical edifice as the Ionian Bank -the first national bank of Greece- which was established in 1839. The extensive collection includes banknotes printed by the Ionian Bank during its operation, as well as all the versions of national banknotes issued by the National Bank of Greece until the coming of the euro in 2002, rare bills from various Greek regions that were secretly issued by the Church during the Ottoman rule as well as all the national banknotes of all the members of the European Union before the establishment of euro. A rather precious exhibit is also an extremely rare Chinese banknote that dates from 1.300 A.D., reportedly one of the oldest ones worldwide. The museum is also home to a series of monetary-related items and registries, such as checks, documents, stamps and printing machines, that guide the visitor through the routine of the bank during its operation years and recreate the past atmosphere. On the second floor of the building, temporary exhibitions and cultural events are frequently organized. During the summer months, the museum operates daily, except for Mondays and Sundays. The Banknote Museum is located in Corfu Town just a 7-minute walk away from the central bus station and a 10-minute walk away from a parking lot. Private transfers : We recommend using an online pre-booked transfer service , which provides transfer by taxi, minibus, or private VIP car and arranging a pickup directly from the airport, port, or your hotel. Alternatively, there’s the option of arranging a pickup by a local driver directly at the following numbers: 0030 26610 39911, 0030 693 484 3704, or 0030 694 726 6811, or booking your taxi online . Public transport : The central bus station of the island is located at Corfu Town. There are bus connections between this bus station and most areas of the island. Consider that time schedules might change according to the season. Check the official timetables here . Tip : Since buses don’t always stop at every scheduled stop of their itinerary, our advice to visitors is to inform the driver about their final destination, so that he makes a stop there.
