Die Würfelquallen (Cubozoa) bilden eine kleine, fast ausschließlich marin vorkommende Klasse der Nesseltiere (Cnidaria) mit derzeit etwa 50 beschriebenen Arten. Der Name rührt vom würfel- (bis quader-)förmigen Schirm der Meduse her. Es handelt sich um einzeln lebende Nesseltiere mit festsitzendem Polypenstadium und freilebendem Medusenstadium. Die Medusenbildung erfolgt meist durch vollständige Metamorphose des Polypen, seltener durch eine besondere Form der Strobilation[1] (Abschnürung). Sie kommen weltweit meist in tropischen und subtropischen Meeren vor; die Polypenentwicklung findet bei einigen Arten auch in ästuarinen Bereichen mit wechselnden Salzgehalten statt. Selten dringen einzelne Arten auch in gemäßigte Breiten vor. Würfelquallen sind aktive, räuberisch lebende Tiere, die in ihrem Bewegungs- und Wanderungsverhalten eher mit Fischen zu vergleichen sind. Sie gehören damit zum Nekton der Meere. Zu den Würfelquallen gehören die wohl am meisten gefürchteten Quallenarten, darunter die Carukia barnesi, eine Art aus der „Irukandji“-Gruppe, die neben anderen Arten das Irukandji-Syndrom auslösen kann, und Chironex fleckeri aus der Gruppe der „Seewespen“, deren Gift einen Menschen

Box jellyfish (class Cubozoa) are cnidarian animals distinguished by their box-like (i.e., cube-shaped) body. Some species of box jellyfish produce potent venom delivered by contact with their tentacles. Stings from some species, including Chironex fleckeri, Carukia barnesi, Malo kingi, and a few others, are extremely painful and often fatal to humans. Some species like the Carybdea murrayana produce a painful sting but are not fatal to humans.
