Caldwell

Caldwell was incorporated by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 10, 1892 and is named after the Rev. James Caldwell, who was pastor an itinerant preacher at the First Presbyterian Church during the Revolutionary War. The Grover Cleveland Birthplace Historic Site is the original home of the 22nd and 24th President of the United States. Our system of government is a “Borough,” which consists of 6 Council members and a Mayor. Every year 2 Council members are elected, and the Mayor is elected every 4 years. We encourage you to vote in all elections. Our school system is the Caldwell-West Caldwell School District, shared with our neighboring community and offers Full-Day Kindergarten. Our district is highly rated, and our students score above national averages on standardized testing. Caldwell and West Caldwell also share recreation, and senior transportation services. Caldwell is also home to Caldwell University, a Catholic co-ed, four-year university with a strong liberal arts core curriculum and nationally accredited professional programs. The university, which has been named one of the “best value schools” in New Jersey, offers 31 undergraduate and 31 graduate programs and NCAA Division II intercollegiate sports. Our Downtown is a regional destination for residents in western Essex County, featuring traditional pubs, coffee shops, local and international restaurants, grocery stores, fashion boutiques, hardware stores, alteration shops, spas, and world famous gelato. The repurposing of classical architecture in our Downtown is raising the bar for local development, attracting new and significant investment in Caldwell.
