thumb|Chichester Cross - at the heart of a busy town Chichester has been occupied since before Roman times, when it was believed to have been one of the bridgeheads of the Roman invasion of Britain. The city centre is built on the Roman town of Noviomagus, and it benefits from the cross-shaped design favoured by the Romans - North Street, South Street, East Street and West Street converge on the Chichester Cross, a medieval market cross. The city centre is still surrounded by much of the Roman wall.

Get around

The centre of Chichester is small, and can easily be covered on foot. As with most other towns in England, the town is well served by buses and taxis.

Bishop's Palace Garden is west side of the cathedral on Canon Lane, open daily 8AM-8PM.

Do

Walk the old city walls Take part in the annual Chichester Festivities Chichester Festival Theatre is on Oaklands Way. Horse-racing: Fontwell Park is a National Hunt (jumps) racetrack along A27 six miles east of Chichester, with most races Nov-March. The National Spirit Hurdle in February is a qualifier for the Cheltenham Cup.

Waitrose Supermarket by the station is open M-Sa 7:30AM-8PM, Su 10AM-4PM.

Eat

The Fat Fig is a pleasant cafe at 42 South St near the station, open daily 8AM-5PM. Brasserie Blanc on The Square serves upmarket French cuisine, open M-Sa noon-11PM, Su noon-9PM. Purchases is a slick place at 31 North St, open M-Sa 11:30AM-11PM, Su 11:30AM-5PM. Boat House at the marina serves Med cuisine, open M-Th 9AM-9PM, F Sa 9AM-10PM, Su 9AM-7PM.

Drink

thumb|The Old Cross pub, North Street Tinwood Estate 5 miles northeast is a vineyard; they offer tours and also have rooms. Crown and Anchor is a cosy pub on the riverside 2 miles southwest of town.
