Chromodorididae

"Chromodorid nudibranchs are among the most gorgeously coloured of all animals." The over 360 described species are primarily found in tropical and subtropical waters, as members of coral reef communities, specifically associated with their sponge prey. The chromodorids are the most speciose family of opisthobranchs. They range in size from less than to over , although most species are approximately in size.

Es handelt sich um meist größere, ausschließlich marine gehäuselose Schneckenarten, die vor allem Schwämme fressen. Der glatte, weiche Mantel ist in vielen Fällen auffällig gefärbt und hat in der Regel keine Skleriten. Der Rand des Rückens kann schmal oder breit sein. Die beiden am Kopf sitzenden lamellierten Fühler, die Rhinophoren, und die meist einfach gegliederten Kiemen sind in der Regel nicht erhöht. Die um den After am Rücken angeordneten Kiemen können in Kiemenscheiden zurückgezogen werden. Die Schnecken haben eine Radula mit vielen Zähnen, meist ohne Mittelzähne, manchmal mit einem kleinen, flachen Mittelzahn. Die Seitenzähne sind hakenförmig, zweispitzig oder sägeblattförmig. Der innere Mund, der Vorder- und Mitteldarm trennt, ist mit einfachen oder mehrzipfeligen Stäbchen versehen. Der sehr lange, gewundene Samenleiter läuft in einen unbewaffneten Penis aus. Chromodorididae, or chromodorids, are a taxonomic family of colourful sea slugs; dorid nudibranchs, marine gastropod mollusks in the superfamily Doridoidea. The chromodorids are the most speciose family of opisthobranchs. They range in size from less than to over , although most species are approximately in size.
Although, they have a worldwide distribution, most species are found in the Indo-Pacific region. A scientific paper published in 2007, found the most widespread chromodorid genera, (Mexichromis, Chromodoris, Glossodoris and Hypselodoris) to be paraphyletic or polyphyletic.
