Klassen innehåller den lågviktiga kolhydraten floridosid. Totalt finns i klassen 67 arter, fördelade på tre ordningar. Arterna i ordningen Compsopogonales lever i sötvatten, medan arterna i de andra ordningarna Erythropeltidales och Rhodochaetales finns i marina miljöer.
