Curt Stern

Curt Stern was a German-born geneticist, zoologist, and university teacher who held citizenship in both Germany and the United States. Born in Hamburg in 1902, he was educated at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and spoke both German and English. His professional career included teaching positions at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, the University of Rochester, and the University of California, Berkeley. He worked in the fields of genetics and zoology.

Stern received the Guggenheim Fellowship, the Kimber Genetics Award, and the ASHG Lifetime Achievement Award. He was a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society. He died in Sacramento in 1981.
