Daniele da Volterra

Daniele da Volterra, born Daniele Ricciarelli in Volterra, was an Italian painter, sculptor, and draftsperson. Active from 1524 until 1566, he worked primarily in Rome. His career was influenced by Il Sodoma and Michelangelo. He is known for the notable work *The Massacre of the Innocents*.

He was also known by the pseudonym Il Braghettone. His works are held in the collections of the Städel Museum, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Museo del Prado, and Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki. He is described in sources including *Teutsche Academie der Edlen Bau- Bild- und Mahlerey-Künste*, *Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects*, *Schilder-boeck*, and the *Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary*. He died in Rome in 1566.
