Edwin Hubble

Edwin Powell Hubble was an American astronomer, astrophysicist, and cosmologist born in Marshfield in 1889 and died in San Marino in 1953. He worked at the Yerkes Observatory and Mount Wilson Observatory. His notable works include *The realm of the nebulae*, *The Hubble atlas of galaxies*, and *Distribution of extra-galactic nebulae*. He was educated at the University of Chicago and The Queen's College.

Hubble received the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society, the Bruce Medal, the Franklin Medal, and a Rhodes Scholarship. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Physics and was a member of the American Philosophical Society and the National Academy of Sciences. He participated in World War I and World War II. He died of natural causes due to a stroke.
