Galileo Galilei

Galileo Galilei was an astronomer, philosopher, mathematician, and physicist born in Pisa in 1564. He was educated at the University of Pisa under doctoral advisor Ostilio Ricci. His professional career included employment at the University of Padua and the University of Pisa, with residence and work locations in Pisa, Padua, and Florence. He was a member of the Accademia della Crusca, Accademia dei Lincei, and Accademia delle Arti del Disegno.

He authored works such as *Della scienza mecanica, e delle utilita che si traggono da gl'istromenti di quella*, *Le opere di Galileo Galilei. Supplemento*, and *Tractatvs de proportionvm instrvmento, quod merito compendium vniuersae geometriae dixeris*. Galileo spoke Latin and Italian. He was the son of Vincenzo Galilei and Giulia Ammannati and had a child, Vincenzo Gamba, with unmarried partner María Gamba. He also had a child named Maria Celeste.

Galileo died in Arcetri in 1642 and is buried in the Basilica of Santa Croce. He held citizenship in the Duchy of Florence and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. He suffered from blindness.
