Con il termine generico di ingegneria genetica (più propriamente tecnologia del DNA ricombinante) si fa riferimento ad una branca delle biotecnologie che consiste in un insieme molto eterogeneo di tecniche che permettono di isolare geni, clonarli, introdurli in un organismo esologo (differente dall'ospite originale).Queste tecniche permettono di conferire caratteristiche nuove alle cellule riceventi. Le cellule così prodotte sono chiamate ricombinanti. L'ingegneria genetica permette anche di alterare la sequenza di DNA del gene originale e di produrne uno più adatto a rispondere ad esigenze specifiche, come avviene ad esempio per quanto riguarda gli OGM.
