A very precocious musician, he achieved his diploma at the Palermo Conservatory when he was eighteen, and in the same year presented a composition, the Requiem Mass, in honour of King Umberto I. He made his debut as a conductor at the Teatro Massimo in Catania and immediately achieved great success that enabled him to conduct all over the world, especially in South America.
