Jacob Bigelow

Jacob Bigelow was an American botanist, poet, university teacher, and physician. He was educated at Harvard College, the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and Harvard Medical School. His professional career included positions at Harvard University, Boston Latin School, and Massachusetts General Hospital. He was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society, receiving the award of Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Bigelow wrote in English, Latin, and Greek. His notable works include *Small-pox*, *An Account of the sphinx at Mount Auburn*, *Notes of lectures upon materia medica*, and *Elements of technology*. He was also recognized in the American Academy Arts Sciences collection. He was born in Watertown in 1787 and died in Boston in 1879. He is buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery. His child was Henry Jacob Bigelow.
