Jean Guitton

Jean Guitton was a French philosopher, theologian, writer, and university teacher. Born in Saint-Étienne in 1901, he received his education at the Lycée du Parc, Lycée Louis-le-Grand, École Normale Supérieure, and the University of Paris. He served as a teacher at the University of Paris and worked for the newspaper La Croix. His religious worldview was aligned with the Catholic Church.

Guitton was a member of the Académie Française and the Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques. He participated in the Second Vatican Council and was influenced by Sergei Bulgakov, having studied under Jacques Chevalier. Among his students was Louis Althusser. His notable works include *Portrait du Père Lagrange*, *Temps et Eternite Chez Plotin et Saint Augustin*, *Lady 213*, *Le problème de Jésus et les Fondements du témoignage chrétien*, and *Images de la Vierge*.

He received several awards, including the Grand prix de littérature de l'Académie française, the Commander of the Legion of Honour, the Bordin Prize, and the Prix Ève Delacroix. He was also nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Guitton died in the 5th arrondissement of Paris in 1999.
