By the end of 2024, the total registered population of the city is 1,593,200, of which the urban population is 1,006 million. Jixi is on the Muling River about from the border with Russia's Primorsky Krai and from Lake Xingkai. The mayor of Jixi is Zhang Changrong () since June 2015. The area is one of the important coal mining bases in China. A crater on asteroid 253 Mathilde was named after the city.
