John XXIII

Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, also known as Ioannes and Giuseppe, was a male Latin Catholic priest and military chaplain who served as Pope John XXIII. Born on November 25, 1881, he worked in Rome, Vatican City, Venice, and Sofia. He spoke Italian, Latin, Portuguese, and French. Roncalli was educated at the Pontifical Roman Seminary and Sapienza University of Rome, where he earned a Doctor of Theology degree. He was influenced by Giacomo Radini-Tedeschi and held the military rank of lieutenant.

He participated in World War I and the 1958 conclave. Roncalli died of stomach cancer on June 3, 1963, due to natural causes. His feast days are October 11 and June 3. He received the Balzan Prize, the Order of St. Gregory the Great, the Order of Pius IX, and the Order of the Golden Spur. He is recognized in the Popes collection and the Presidential Medal Of Freedom collection. His motto was Oboedientia et Pax.
