Joseph Halpern

Joseph Halpern was a computer scientist, engineer, and university teacher born in Israel in 1953. He held citizenship in Israel and the United States and was employed by Cornell University. Halpern was educated at the University of Toronto and Harvard University. He served as a doctoral student under Albert R. Meyer and supervised doctoral students including Daphne Koller and Yoram Moses.

He received the Guggenheim Fellowship, Dijkstra Prize, Gödel Prize, and ACM-AAAI Allen Newell Award. Halpern was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, and Association for Computing Machinery. He was recognized in the American Academy Arts Sciences collection. His works include *History of our people in Bible times*, *Proceedings of the 2013 Conference on Theoretical Aspects of Rationality and Knowledge*, *History of our people in Rabbinic times*, *Mallarme ́*, and *Probabilistic and Causal Inference*.

Halpern died in Ithaca in 2026 due to cancer from natural causes. He spoke English and Hebrew. His name in his native language was Joseph Yehuda Halpern.
