Joseph Phillimore

Joseph Phillimore (1775–1855) was a male legal historian, politician, and university teacher from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Born in London, he was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church. He worked in London and spoke English and Latin. Phillimore was a member of the House of Commons and Christ Church, and he was recognized in the Royal Society collection. He received the award of Fellow of the Royal Society.

His notable works include *Reflections on the nature and extent of the license trade*, *Copy of an act of Parliament for preventing clandestine marriages*, and *Reports of cases argued and determined in the English ecclesiastical courts [1724-18]*. He also authored *A letter addressed to a member of the House of Commons* and *Substance of the speech of Joseph Phillimore, LL. D.* Phillimore stood in the 1818, 1820, and 1826 United Kingdom general elections. He died in Reading in 1855 and is buried at St Paul's Cathedral. His archives are held at the National Library of Wales. He was the father of Sir Robert Phillimore, 1st Baronet.
