Jozef Schell

Jozef Schell was a Belgian biologist and university teacher who served as a professor and molecular biologist. Born in Antwerp in 1935, he was educated at Ghent University. His professional career included positions at the University of Cologne, Ghent University, and the Collège de France, with work locations including Cologne. He died in Brussels in 2003.

Schell held the noble title of baron and was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, and the National Academy of Sciences. He received several awards, including the Wilhelm Exner Medal, the Francqui Prize, the Max Planck Research Award, and the Grand Prix Charles-Leopold Mayer.

His notable works include *New Developments in Plant Hormone Research* and *Een experimentele bijdrage tot de biochemische omschrijving van natuurlijke bakteriele soorten*. He is recognized in the American Academy Arts Sciences collection.
