تنتشر الأبجدية اللاتينية/ الرومية في كثير من بلاد العالم، ففي القرن العشرين بدلت لغات كثيرة أبجديتهم (كما فعل الترك والفيتناميون) لكن أول من استعملها الرومان، إذ نقلوها من الأبجدية الإتروسكية في شمال إيطاليا. كانت حروفها ثلاثة وعشرين، ثم أضاف حروف J :بعد حرف I لكتابة الجيم غير المشبعة—، Y وZ بعد X لكتابة أصوات اليونانية: : الحروف إي لنغا (J؛ ‎['i: 'ɫɔŋga]‏)، أو (U؛ ‎/u:/‏) وأو دبلكس (W؛ ‎/'u: 'dʊplɛks/‏) من الأبجدية الحديثة.
