Juvenile females (28–30 mm) with dorsal profile of frontals angular, usually raised into a short sharp spine; sphenotic, preopercular, and angular spines well developed, symphysial spine of lower jaw short; adult females (135–182 mm) with all spines short and blunt, frontal spines absent; juveniles with 4–8 teeth on each premaxilla, arranged in four series; 5–8 teeth on each dentary, arranged in three series; longest tooth 10–23% SL; adults with 14 premaxillary teeth, 7 or 8 dentary teeth; juveniles with a pair of vomerine teeth, adults with two pairs. Length of illicium 39–60% SL (50–60% in specimens 30–182 mm); dorsal-fin rays 3; anal-fin rays 2 or 3; pectoral-fin rays 15 or 16. Esca and distal part of illicial stem of juveniles unpigmented, pigment extending onto base of escal bulb in adults; shape of esca very similar in three juveniles in which it is retained; transverse blunt ridge of escal bulb slightly raised into lateral lobes; escal bulb of adults smoothly rounded without transverse ridge.Length of barbel 40–86% SL, longest in holotype, but without distinct relation to size of specimens; four primary branches of barbel nearly equal in length in all specimens, tending to f
