The Luna programme was the Soviet Union's series of spacecraft missions to explore the Moon during the Cold War space race. It matters because it achieved several historic firsts, including the first spacecraft to reach the Moon and the first to land on its surface, advancing human understanding of lunar geology and space exploration capabilities.
