マジョリティ(英:majority)は、本来、「多数者」・「多数派」を意味する英語の言葉。対義語はマイノリティ(少数者・少数派)。形容詞はメジャー (major)。 人が集まると集団が出来る。集団を集合ととらえたときの最大の部分集合がマジョリティになる。 また、英語の本来の意味にはない、日本における独特な「マジョリティ」の使い方として、「単純な人数としては必ずしも多数でなくとも、様々な経緯によって、強い発言力を持ち優位な立場に立つグループ」を指すことがある。以下に、例を挙げる。 * 征服王朝の支配階層 * 植民地における宗主国出身者 * 高齢社会における男性(女性の方が平均寿命が長いので数が多くなる) * アパルトヘイト体制下の南アフリカにおける白人 マジョリティは、多数派であるが故に、意識せずマイノリティに不利な環境を作る場合がある。例えば、日本においては自動改札などが右利き(マジョリティ)に便利なように作ってあるため、左利き(マイノリティ)には不便な作りとなっている。
