Malachi Richard Thompson (1949-2006), was an American jazz trumpeter who described his style - a blend of bop and free jazz - as 'freebop'. Inspired to start playing the trumpet after attending a performance by Count Basie and his big band when he was 11 years old, Thompson went on to work with Lester Bowie, avant-garde / free jazz musicians such as Archie Shepp and his group Africa Brass which took its inspiration from the New Orleans tradition of brass bands. He died in 2006 of cancer. <a hr
