Мессинский ярус (Мессиний) — геологический ярус верхнего миоцена . Охватывает период между 7,246 ± 0,005 млн и 5,332 ± 0,005 млн лет назад. Мессинский ярус был впервые выделен Карлом Маером-Аймаром в 1867 году. В 1868 году им было определено положение мессиния в стратиграфической шкале между тортоном и плиоценом. Получил название по городу Мессина в Италии (Сицилия). В Центральной и Восточной Европе отложениям этого яруса соответствует сарматский ярус. На время формирования мессинского яруса около 6 миллионов лет назад приходится мессинский пик солёности — частичное или полное высыхание Средиземного моря.
