He studied composition and jazz at the University of Southern Maine and with Matt Wilson and Les Harris, Jr., & performed with legendary jazz educator David Baker. Mike moved to New York City in the year 2000 to study at the New School of Jazz & Contemporary Music and later began studying privately with the legendary percussionis
