Mortimer Wheeler

Mortimer Wheeler, also known as Sir Robert Eric Mortimer Wheeler, was a British archaeologist and art historian born in Glasgow in 1890. He served as a brigadier during World War I and World War II. His professional career included positions as a director at the London Museum, the UCL Institute of Archaeology, and Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales. He was educated at University College London and was influenced by Augustus Pitt Rivers.

Wheeler received several honors, including the Military Cross, Knight Bachelor, Order of the Companions of Honour, and Fellow of the British Academy. He was a member of the Royal Society, the German Archaeological Institute, the British Academy, and the Society of Antiquaries of London. He was married to Tessa Wheeler and had a student named Olwen Brogan. He died in London and Leatherhead in 1976.

His written works, produced in English, include *Charsada, a metropolis of the North-west Frontier*, *Archaeology from the earth*, *Roman Africa in color*, *Splendors of the East*, and *Civiltà dell'Indo e del Gange*. He is recognized in the Royal Society collection.
