L'obstétrique est une spécialité médico-chirurgicale qui a pour objet l'étude et la prise en charge de la grossesse et de l'accouchement. La sage-femme et le médecin (obstétricien) en sont les principaux praticiens. En raison de l'évolution de la technique, le fœtus peut être considéré comme un patient et la est apparue comme une spécialité à part entière. Elle doit ses lettres de noblesse à François Mauriceau, du XVIIe siècle. L'obstétricien est en effet confronté à la surveillance de deux « patients » : la femme enceinte et son (futur) enfant, et cette prise en charge nécessite une approche à la fois médicale, iconographique (échographies), psychologique, pédiatrique (en cas de dépistage d'une maladie fœtale). La chirurgie peut intervenir en période anténatale (électrocoagulation des anastomoses placentaires pour le syndrome transfuseur-transfusé des grossesses gémellaires mono choriales) ou lors de l'accouchement, dans les circonstances qui encadrent la naissance.
