Oscar Hertwig

Oscar Wilhelm August Hertwig was a German zoologist, anatomist, biologist, and university teacher born in Friedberg on April 21, 1849. He studied at Friedrich Schiller University Jena under Ernst Haeckel and later taught at Friedrich Schiller University Jena and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. His field of work included natural history, and he authored works such as *Text-book of the embryology of man and mammals* and *Lehrbuch der Entwicklungsgeschichte des Menschen und der Wirbeltiere*.

Hertwig was a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences, and the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Lower Saxony. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He died in Berlin on October 25, 1922, and is buried at Grunewald Cemetery. He was the sibling of Richard Hertwig and the father of Paula Hertwig.
