По результатам исследований, основанных на анализе последовательностей 16s рРНК и множества морфологических признаков, выявлено 19 трудноразличимых видов. В России широко распространён один вид — ушан (P. auritus), расселённый почти по всей Палеарктике до 60—62 градусов с. ш. Другие известные виды характеризуются менее обширными ареалами, обитая в Европе (P. austriacus), на Канарских островах (P. teneriffae), в горных областях Европы и на Кавказе (P. alpinus и P. macrobullaris), в Африке (P. balensis), в Юго-восточной Азии (P. taivanus).
