Łączy części grzbietową (tergum) i brzuszną (sternum) danego segmentu. Osadzone są w niej odnóża. Może być w całości błoniasta (błona pleuralna) lub tworzyć skleryt boczny, czyli pleuryt. U owadów silnym modyfikacjom ulegać może w tułowiu i końcowych segmentach odwłoka.
