BYD was founded by Wang Chuanfu in February 1995 as a battery manufacturing company. Its largest subsidiary, BYD Auto, was established in 2003 and has since become the world's largest manufacturer of plug-in electric vehicles. Since 2009, BYD's automotive business has accounted for over 50% of its revenue, surpassing 80% by 2023. The company also produces rechargeable batteries (including handset batteries, electric vehicle batteries, and energy storage systems), forklifts, solar panels, semiconductors, and rail transit systems.
