Described by Elwyn Simons & Philip Gingerich in 1974, the generic name is a combination of Qarun, the Arabic term for Lake Moeris, and -avus, Latin for "ancestor". The specific epithet honours Grant E. Mayer of the Yale Peabody Museum.
