It is the administrative headquarters of Ratlam district, which was created in 1947 after the independence of India. It is located 294 kilometres west of the state capital Bhopal.

Originally called Ratnapuri, the historical city is bounded in the west by Chittaurgarh district in Rajasthan state. Ratlam is popular for its historical and ancient religious monuments. It was famous for the production and trade of opium and tobacco. The place is now known for producing chemicals, copper wires, perfumes, pottery and textiles.

In 2024 Indian general election, Anita Nagar Singh Chouhan of Bharatiya Janata Party was elected as the Member of Parliament from Ratlam.
