A dichotomously branched perennial herb, up to 1 m tall. Stem solid, warty, leafy below, leafless above. Leaves 2(-5) petiolate,petiole half the length of leaf, blade suborbicular, obtuse, 30-50 x 25-40 cm, cordate, usually glabrous above, verrucose below, at the base somewhat spiny on the veins, 3-veined, broader than long, margin ± undulate. Flowers pedicellate, pedicel articulate at or below the middle, 6-7 mm long. Perianth segments 6 in 2 whorls, c. 3 mm long, 1.5 mm broad, persistent in fruit. Fruit ovate-oblong, cordate, c. 1.5-1.8 x 1.2-1.5 cm. Nut ovate-oblong, dull brown; wings reddish, broad.
