Roy Jenkins

Roy Harris Jenkins (1920–2003) was a British politician, historian, writer, and biographer. Born in Abersychan, he served in the British Army during World War II. His political career included roles as Home Secretary, Shadow Home Secretary, Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, and President of the European Commission. He was a member of the Labour Party, the Liberal Democrats, and the Social Democratic Party. Jenkins also held positions in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Jenkins was educated at Cardiff University and Balliol College. He worked in London and authored numerous works, including *Gladstone, A Biography*, *Sir Charles Dilke : an examination of the evidence given at the two trials of the Crawford divorce case*, and *Mr. Balfour's Poodle*. His accolades include the Charlemagne Prize, the Wolfson History Prize, the Order of Merit, and an honorary doctorate. He died of a myocardial infarction in East Hendred.
