Shrek è un personaggio immaginario ed è il protagonista dell'omonima serie di film. È un orco verde che compare in tutti i film e i cortometraggi della serie, doppiato da Mike Myers nell'edizione originale e da Renato Cecchetto in lingua italiana. L'originale è protagonista del libro del 1990 di William Steig Shrek!, forse l'adattamento cinematografico si è ispirato al wrestler francese Maurice Tillet. Il suo nome deriva dal termine in tedesco "Schreck" e dal termine in yiddish "שרעק" (shreck), che significano "paura", "terrore". Il 21 maggio 2010, Shrek ha ricevuto una star nella Hollywood Walk of Fame a Los Angeles e nel giugno 2010, Entertainment Weekly ha nominato Shrek tra i 100 Greatest Characters of the Last 20 Years (100 migliori personaggi degli ultimi 20 anni).
