I Soft Machine sono un gruppo musicale inglese formatosi nel 1966 a Canterbury, nel Kent. Il nome viene dall'omonimo romanzo di William S. Burroughs del 1961, pubblicato in italiano con il titolo La macchina morbida. Scioltisi nel 1984, dal 1999 alcuni ex-membri del gruppo hanno dato vita a band satelliti e nel 2015 l'ultimo di questi gruppi, i Soft Machine Legacy, ha ripreso la denominazione originale Soft Machine. Sono stati una delle formazioni di punta della scena di Canterbury, nonché una delle band pioniere del rock progressivo e, insieme ai Pink Floyd e ai Tomorrow, rappresentano la prima originale ondata della sperimentazione e della psichedelia a Londra. Il loro stile musicale si è evoluto negli anni e dai primi anni settanta si basa sulla fusion.
