Sokolov ( Czech pronunciation: [ˈsokolof], until 1948 Falknov nad Ohří; German: Falkenau an der Eger) is a town in the Karlovy Vary Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 22,000 inhabitants. The town is located on the Ohře River in the Sokolov Basin, the region known for lignite mining. The most valuable monuments of Sokolov are the Church of Saint James the Great and Sokolov Castle.
