A barracuda is a large, predatory, ray-finned, saltwater fish of the genus Sphyraena, the only genus in the family Sphyraenidae, which was named by Constantine Samuel Rafinesque in 1815. It is found in tropical and subtropical oceans worldwide ranging from the eastern border of the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea, on its western border the Caribbean Sea, and in tropical areas of the Pacific Ocean. Barracudas reside near the top of the water and near coral reefs and sea grasses. Barracudas are often targeted by sport-fishing enthusiasts.

Sphyraena est un genre de poissons, communément appelés sphyrènes, de la famille monotypique des Sphyraenidae. Ce genre regroupe entre 18 et 20 espèces de poissons prédateurs réparties dans les eaux tropicales et subtropicales et nommées barracudas ou bécunes. Ce sont de grands poissons tropicaux et subtropicaux, dont on trouve des espèces dans tous les principaux bassins océaniques. Le corps est fuselé, ce qui leur permet des pointes de vitesse importantes. La bouche est grande avec une mâchoire inférieure prognathe (plus longue que la supérieure), et des dents acérées, disposées en lame de scie. La mâchoire supérieure n'est pas protractile, ce qui est une apomorphie permettant de se nourrir de proies plus coriaces. La ligne latérale est bien développée, et les peignes branchiaux vestigiaux.
