Il primo motore monocilindrico diviso in produzione è stato costruito nel 1918 e il design è stato utilizzato su diverse motociclette ed auto fino alla metà degli anni '50, sebbene una società abbia continuato a produrre motori monocilindrici divisi per motocicli fino al 1970. Durante questo periodo, il design è stato occasionalmente utilizzato anche per motori con quattro o più cilindri.
