Takatsugu Muramatsu

Born in 1978 in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, Japan, Takatsugu Muramatsu made his debut at the age of 18 with the original piano solo album Mado (Window). He graduated from the Composition Department of Kunitachi College of Music. While still a student, he composed the score for the Kadokawa film Inugami, marking the beginning of a prolific career. Since then, he has worked across a wide range of genres including film, television dramas, commercials, theme parks, stage productions, and musicals. Muramatsu received the Japan Academy Film Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Music three times: for 64: Part I and The 8-Year Engagement in consecutive years, and later for Mamorarenakattamonotachihe. His soundtrack piece “Reality” from the Netflix film In Love and Deep Water won the Best Film Cue at the Film Tracks Awards 2023. Beyond film scores, Muramatsu is also known for his songwriting for artists such as Mariya Takeuchi (Inochi no Uta), Josh Groban (Michishirube), the UK boys’ choir group LIBERA (Far Away), Aoi Teshima (Tadaima) and Keisuke Yamauchi’s Kurenai no Chō (“Crimson Butterfly”). Notably, Crimson Butterfly won the Best Enka/Kayōkyoku Song Award at the MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN 2025. His contributions to animation films have also gained international acclaim. He composed the score for Studio Ghibli’s When Marnie Was There, nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 88th Academy Awards. His other works include Mary and The Witch’s Flower, Lu Over the Wall (winner of the Grand Prize at the 2017 Annecy International Animation Film Festival), Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko, Phoenix: Reminiscence Of Flower, Disney+ film Phoenix: Eden 17, and Netflix’s In Love and Deep Water. In 2025, he composed the music for the anime film ChaO which won the Jury Prize at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2025. Muramatsu’s work extends globally, including composing Tomorrow’s Leaves for the International Olympic Committee (IOC), as well as the parade music for Lotte World in South Korea. He also wrote Midori no Tora (Green Tiger), the required piece for the elementary school division of the 90th NHK National School Music Competition in Japan. In November 2024, he held a special concert titled Takatsugu Muramatsu Concert in KOREA at the prestigious Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall.
