Tavistock

Plymouth Road Cemetery was opened in 1884 and extended in the 1950’s. The older parts of the cemetery are characterised by mature trees and Victorian monuments whilst the newer part of the cemetery is laid out in a lawn style. At the heart of the cemetery lies the chapel, designed by local architect Henry Clutton and made of local Dartmoor granite and bath stone. The chapel is available for funeral and remembrance services and seats 40 to 50 persons. The Green Burial Meadow provides a nature-rich, informal environment and an ecological option for burials in Tavistock. The area is managed as a hay meadow and is mown in high summer to benefit pollinating insects and allow wildflowers to set seed. The Friends of the Green Burial Meadow contribute to the management of the site by sowing wildflower seeds, planting and raking. The Green Burial Meadow has achieved ‘Outstanding’ for the last two years in the South West in Bloom It’s Your Neighbourhood awards. The Town Council has adopted the IBCA Charter for the Bereaved, and is committed to improving the service offered to the bereaved in Tavistock.
