Thomas Bartholin

Thomas Bartholin (1616–1680) was a Danish mathematician, theologian, physician, and anatomist. Born and dying in Copenhagen, he was a citizen of Denmark–Norway and resided in Denmark. He worked at the University of Copenhagen and was educated at the University of Copenhagen, the University of Padua, and the University of Basel. His doctoral advisor was Franciscus Sylvius. Bartholin spoke Latin and adhered to Lutheranism.

His fields of work included medicine and anatomy. He was the father of Caspar Bartholin the Younger and Thomas Bartholin, and the son of Caspar Bartholin the Elder. His siblings included Rasmus Bartholin, and his relative was Thomas Fincke. Bartholin authored twenty works, including *Th. Bartholini De medicina Danorum domestica dissertationes X.*, *Messis aurea exhibens*, *De venis tam lacteis thoracicis, quam lymphaticis, novissimè repertis*, *Messis aurea triennalis, exhibens; anatomica*, and *De sanguine vetito disqvisitio uberior*. He is described by sources such as the *Svensk uppslagsbok*, *Nordisk familjebok*, the *Cyclopaedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature*, and the *Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary*.
